Is pineapple fiber biodegradable?

The answer depends on what the product contains. Raw pineapple leaf fiber and a finished coated textile are different materials. A claim about one cannot automatically be applied to the other.
What the Piñatex manufacturer says
Ananas Anam states that Piñatex is not fully biodegradable. Its FAQ describes the base as pineapple leaf fiber and PLA, biodegradable under controlled industrial conditions, with polyurethane used in the finish. The proportions vary across collections.
That information does not establish home compostability, marine biodegradability, or a universal decomposition time for finished products.
What to ask a supplier
- What is the complete composition, including backing, binders, coatings, and treatments?
- Does testing apply to the finished product or only one component?
- Which test method, conditions, and duration support the claim?
- Will your local waste processor actually accept the product?
Correction to our earlier guide
We removed unsupported decomposition timelines and claims about safe marine disposal, zero landfill impact, and absence of microplastics. These should not have been presented as established properties of all pineapple fiber products. Do not dispose of textiles in soil or waterways.
