Bamboo fiber and bamboo-derived rayon
Reviewed and corrected
“Bamboo fabric” is not a precise enough description for a sourcing decision. Ask how the fiber was made and what the finished fabric contains.
Two different material categories
Mechanically extracted bamboo fiber and regenerated cellulose made using bamboo as a feedstock should be identified separately. The FTC explains that soft, silky bamboo-derived fabrics are often rayon or viscose, and processing does not preserve all the properties of the plant.
Antibacterial claims need evidence
The FTC cautions that there is no evidence that rayon made from bamboo is naturally antibacterial. Request product-specific testing rather than relying on a claim about bamboo plants.
A buyer’s checklist
- Confirm the fiber name, process, and blend percentages.
- Ask for evidence covering the finished fabric and any treatments.
- Check chemical management, water use, and wastewater practices at the relevant facility.
- Assess durability and end-of-life claims for the actual product.
Correction to our earlier guide
We removed blanket antibacterial, hypoallergenic, biodegradability, and absorbency claims, along with unsupported environmental rankings. Plant origin alone does not establish these properties.
